CNM and Charles Schwab Bank partner to offer nonprofits four half-day sessions on financial basics and best practices. Nonprofit professionals will get acquainted with accrual accounting, become pros at financial statements, learn how to process different types of donations, and expertly tackle a Form 990. Each nonprofit may send up to two participants per registration. Please note: You must attend all sessions to obtain your certificate.


Course Outline:

Accounting Basics

  • Introduction to accrual accounting
  • Introduction and orientation to nonprofit financial statements
    • Purposes of financial statements
    • Accounting equation
    • The three (or four) basic financial statements
    • Basic analysis and budgeting concepts
  • Introduction to Form 990, including page by page discussion of main form


Financial Best Practices

  • Frequently asked questions on nonprofit tax and accounting related to:
    • In-kind donations
    • Agency transactions
    • Tax acknowledgements and disclosures for donations
    • Third-party events
    • Accountable versus non-accountable reimbursement plans
    • Various other tax considerations
  • Best practices for grant and functional expense allocations
  • Practical methods of tracking restricted and conditional donations
  • Overview of audits, reviews, compilations, and single audits
